Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.
Alice: …so long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you're sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.

Presumably you have a better sense of direction than Alice. A long and winding road may be a romantic notion, but is not recommended for researchers who want to finish on time with a quality product. You probably have a good idea of when you want to finish your paper, article, thesis, or dissertation; and you have at least a general idea about your topic and research method. General ideas are enough to get you started, but those ideas must be fully developed by planning, organizing, and controlling the details of your project.
