The first rule of any technology… is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.

Like physicists studying entropy, quantitative social science investigators attempt to examine isolated variables as they conduct social research, but in many cases variables cannot be isolated. Social scientists work in a world where the environmental variables are so overwhelming that quantitative research methods must sometimes give way to more open and unstructured investigations.

To be dependable, qualitative studies must be backed by solid research methods and an orderly structure. Your research efforts will be more efficient and of higher quality if you carefully organize and control your work.
